Student Network take part in Plumpton College Open Day

Plumpton College held its Open Day this year on Saturday 10 May 2008. With the sun shining brightly in the sky, the crowds flocked to the unique fun and informative college open day. As well as wine tasting and demonstrations by the forestry students, visitors could also enjoy piglet petting, and watch the highly competitive terrier racing.
The Student Network Sussex were involved in the Open Day for the first time this year, as part of the Open Day Careers Exhibition. The Student Network Sussex team is a group of nine students based in Sussex, including web designers, graphic designers, and event managers. I recently graduated from the MA Event Management course at the University of Brighton, and helped coordinate the student presence at the event. After all, who better to promote vocational learning than the students themselves? It was great for the Student Network to be a part of this and I feel all parties worked together really well.
Claire Johnson, a BA (Hons) Multimedia student, produced an animation based on student experiences, which was displayed in Plumpton College’s Conference Room. Information Advice and Guidance Officers from the Sussex Learning Network also were also present at the careers event, talking to visitors about paths to higher education. There was also a wealth of online resources and information leaflets available.
To ensure that attendees got the most from their experience at the Open Day, current and past students of Plumpton College were present as Student Ambassadors. Each ambassador had different areas of interest and offered valuable information to attendees. This further emphasises the Student Network’s belief that often the best information for students is generated by students. David Phillips, Careers Advisor at Plumption College, said of the students and IAG officers that ”they brought a whole new dimension to the event, and next year we must do it again or some thing similar.”
