Alexandra McLoughlin: Runner up for the BTEC Learner of the Year Award

Article by Amanda Williams

Alexandra McLoughlin has come a long way since she was subjected to racial bullying when she was at secondary school. Her feisty and ambitious personality helped to overcome the effects of bullying. And now she’s won runner-up place for the BTEC Learner of the Year Award.

Alex is studying at Central Sussex College in Crawley. Her BTEC is in Media Production which includes radio, film studies, and video editing. She really enjoys the experience her course is giving her. ‘I find the teachers very supportive and friendly. They’ll always help me if I have a problem.’ They had no idea she was applying for the award. ‘My teacher who wrote the reference was really impressed that I’d used my initiative to find about it. He was especially impressed when he found out how well I'd done!’ For Alex, winning the award is doubly important: it demonstrates how determined she is and of course it will be good on her CV.

Alex is teaching herself music journalism. To work for NME or Kerrang is her dream. Rivals in their field, the two magazines cover different types of bands and music. Not someone to sit around waiting for something to happen, Alex interviews bands for Europunk www.europunk.net in preparation for her chosen career path. ‘I am preparing my portfolio. Music journalism is a very competitive field and eventually I’d like to work for TV shows such as Popworld. Alexa Chung is one of my idols and I’d like to interview bands on TV.’ Alex has her own website where you can both listen to and read her interviews with bands: http://www.alexmediaproduction.zoomshare.com

Alex has got a provisional offer of a place at Goldsmith University to study for a BA in Media and Communications. Her teachers are very positive about Alex’s expected grades, so it’s looking good that the provisional offer will become firm. ‘I’m extremely excited and have worked out how I’m going to present myself.’ Alex might go on to do a Masters. It doesn’t seem as if she’d allow anything to stand in her way.

Well done Alex!
