Amanda Williams, student from Brighton, studying at the University of Sussex
What course are you studying and why?
MA in Creative Writing and Authorship. In 2004, I completed a Certificate in Creative Writing at Sussex University and discovered I had a bug for writing. I have always written poetry and short stories, but never as much as I write now. I’ve had my poetry read out on BBC radio and was short-listed for a national short story competition, and in 2005, I won an award for my first novel, 'Curved Moon.' This novel will be published by Bluechrome Press in March 2009. There is so much to learn about writing and I like studying and stretching myself to the limit.
What does it involve?
I’m studying for the MA on a part time basis and have completed one year. The course gives me support for the novel I am working on and we also study historical and contemporary writers and examine how they mastered the craft of writing fiction. We have to produce essays as well as our own creative writing for marking and at the end of this year we will have to present a dissertation.
Do you work?
I have a disability, so stopped working full time in 2002. But I am a qualified English teacher, so do a bit of private tuition. I spend a lot of my time writing.
What motivates you?
I’m really not sure. I just have an urge to write. I think by writing, I work things out. I also like doing the research that is involved in the fiction I write, as well as the reading I have to do for essays – as long as I don’t leave it to the last minute.
Why Student Network?
I think Student Network provides good opportunities for students to practise their skills and read about other students experiences. It is also an excellent source of information and being student-led it only covers subjects that are of interest to students.
What does the future hold?
To complete the Masters and finish the novel I’m working on and then write another one! I'd like to teach occasionally on Creative Writing workshops. And as I am a bit addicted to being a student, if I can get funding, I might go on to study for a P h D.
